Senator Chuck Hagel
Biography
Chuck Hagel was born and raised in Platte, Nebraska. He served in Vietnam and when he returned home attended the University of Nebraska. Hagel went on to work for Congressman McCollister and worked his way up the ranks within the office. He was one of two main speakers at the 1982 groundbreaking of the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial. Hagel then used all of his savings and started Vanguard Cellular Systems, which became the second largest independent cell phone company in the nation. In 1996, Hagel defeated then-Governor Ben Nelson for the Senate seat and easily won re-election in 2002. He currently serves on the Banking, Houseing & Urban Affairs, Foreign Relations, Rules & Administration, and Select Intelligence Committees. (2006 Almanac of American Politics)
