Senator Sam Brownback
Biography
Sen. Brownback grew up on a farm in Anderson County, some 50 miles from Kansas City. After law school, he practiced law for four years and was then appointed secretary of the state Board of Agriculture in 1986. In March 1994, after 2nd District Democrat Jim Slattery ran for governor, he announced for Congress. He won the three-way House primary. Two years later, he ran for Sen. Bob Dole's open seat, winning a primary against Lieutenant Governor Sheila Frahm. He was elected to a full six-year term in 1998 and again in 2004. Senator Brownback currently serves on the Appropriations, Judiciary, and Joint Economic Committees. (2006 Almanac of American Politics)
