Biography
Mitt Romney was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1947. He attended Brigham Young University for his undergraduate degree and went on to Harvard and received an M.B.A as well as a law degree. Romney first ran for political office in 1994 against Sen. Kennedy but lost the race. In February 1999, he was asked to head the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics Organizing Committee, which was in deficit and suffering from charges of misconduct. Romney erased a $379 million deficit, rallied 23,000 volunteers and ran an effective security operation at the February 2002 Winter Games. He ran for and won the governorship of Massachusetts in 2001. Governor Romney did not seek re-election in 2006. (2006 Almanac of American Politics)
