Biography
John Edwards was elected to the Senate in 1998. He was born in South Carolina and grew up there and in Robbins, North Carolina. He was the first in his family to go to college, at North Carolina State, and then went to the University of North Carolina Law School. He then moved to Raleigh in 1981 and became a plaintiff's personal injury lawyer. In 1998, Edwards defeated incumbent Republican Senator Lauch Faircloth. Edwards withdrew his candidacy from the presidential race in March 2004 and went on to run as John Kerry's Vice Presidential nominee in the general election. Since 2004, Edwards has served as the director of the Center on Poverty, Work, and Opportunity at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. (2006 Almanac of American Politics)
